A selvedge denim fabric is a high-quality type of denim, often combined with traditional weaving methods. The term ‘selvedge’ refers to the edges of the fabric, which are cleanly finished and do not fray.
Selvedge denim is woven on antique looms, called shuttle looms, which produce a narrower width of fabric than modern looms. This creates naturally finished edges, characterised by a visible coloured stripe on the inside of the denim reverse, often red or blue.
Because of this tight, traditional weave, selvedge denim is denser and more robust than industrially woven denim. It is, therefore, renowned for its longevity.
Selvedge is often seen as a sign of quality and craftsmanship. Denim lovers particularly appreciate the ‘raw’ look of selvedge, as it develops a unique patina over time and with wear.
Selvedge denim jeans are often produced in small quantities, making them rarer and usually more expensive.
Selvedge is prized for its authentic, vintage feel, especially by those looking for durable, carefully crafted jeans.
